SXSW 2010 Review: MacGruber

Editor’s Note: I wrote this review just over two months ago but since the movie is being released today, I thought I would give it a bump.¬† The version we saw at SXSW was listed as “unfinished” but we were told that it was just some effects shots that hadn’t been completed.¬† That said, my [...]

Breachtube: SXSW Film 2010 Midnight Bumper

I’ve been trying to find this for a few days and I guess I just wasn’t looking hard enough. Each year at SXSW, videos play to introduce SXSW to the audience. Most of these so called “bumpers” get a little tedious after about the 5th time through, but this one just stuck out as being completely awesome. We actually bumped into one of the producers for this bumper, Mark, a few times throughout the festival and he was exceptionally nice.

Check it out after the jump and imagine if stuff like this introduced every film you saw.

SXSW 2010 Goodies: Video from the MacGruber Panel

I mentioned this in my panel coverage and finally found some videos. Here is the cast recreating the “Surprise Kitty” video sensation from the internet and also a video of Seth Meyers telling the “Boner Ghost” story, after the jump!

SXSW 2010 Leftovers: Elektra Luxx, Camp Victory, Afghanistan, American Grindhouse, Cargo, Outcast, Cold Weather, and Monsters

This article is what’s left of the 21 movies I saw during SXSW 2010. I’ve lumped them all together here because either I didn’t get to finish them, I don’t feel smart enough to write about them properly, or they just weren’t as engaging as some of the rest.

Check it out after the jump!

SXSW 2010 Review: Get Low

Sometimes I don’t need a complicated story to enjoy a movie. ¬†At the same time, I don’t want to have my brain turned off so as to not feel the movie is below me (if there is such a thing). ¬†Get Low is the perfect mix- a simple yet smartly told story. ¬†Upon exiting the [...]

SXSW 2010 Review: Harry Brown

This movie has so much appeal that I could just write “Michael Caine Revenge Flick,” and spike my keyboard like I just scored a touchdown. But that would be a little bizarre what with me being alone and not able to show off said destruction to anyone. Hang on, let me go get the dog. [...]

SXSW 2010 Review: The People vs. George Lucas

I think at some point, every film fan has been pissed off at Mr. Lucas. I wasn’t so mad about the Star Wars Special Editions or prequels. But I imagine that if I hadn’t been on my honeymoon when I saw Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and thus in a heightened state of happiness, I would have blown a gasket. And he didn’t even direct that movie.

The People vs. George Lucas is a documentary that analyzes this bizarre relationship that filmgoers have with the man behind some of the biggest pop culture icons we’ve ever had. The movie navigates through a series of talking heads, stock footage, and fan made media to illustrate not only the dearth of material for and against the man but also just to show how ingrained into our society his work is. This all allows the movie to be extremely humorous at times and even strangely touching.

SXSW 2010 Review: American: The Bill Hicks Story

For me, and possibly a majority of America, the name Bill Hicks is familiar but not a name that brings back memories.  Hicks was a stand up comedian who tragically passed away before he was fully accepted in his homeland.  Given that his material has become a even more topical in the last few years, [...]

SXSW 2010 Review: Saturday Night

Have you ever wondered what it takes to deliver an episode of Saturday Night Live? ¬†James Franco’s new documentary, Saturday Night, attempts to answer that question. ¬†Shooting in a cinema verit√© style, we follow the cast and crew, including host John Malkovich, from pitch meetings, overnight writing sessions, rehearsals, and even the dress rehearsal. ¬†I’ll [...]

SXSW 2010 Film Panel Coverage: How to defuse a bomb and other life lessons from the cast of MacGruber

I‚Äôm trying this out for the first time.¬† If you think it sucks, feel free to tell me in the comments.¬† In case you haven’t attended something like this before, panels at SXSW for specific movies traditionally involve a brief conversation with the filmmakers and a moderator regarding the movie.¬† Then they open the floor [...]

SXSW 2010 Review: Lemmy

Any metal head worth their weight knows of Lemmy. ¬†Hell, I don’t even consider myself a true fan of Motorhead but I know who this guy is. ¬†But I didn’t know anything about him other than he’s considered a God of the rock and roll genre. ¬†That said, I was genuinely excited to watch this [...]

SXSW 2010 Review: Cyrus

This was the first Duplass Bros. film I had seen. ¬†I’ve heard lots of great things about The Puffy Chair and Baghead but for whatever reason I just haven’t jumped on the Mumblecore bandwagon and sat down to watch them. ¬†When I heard that Cyrus would be playing the festival, I jumped at the chance, [...]

SXSW 2010 Review: The Loved Ones

I’m literally pushing two other reviews aside so I can run this one today. I liked it that much. Do you remember how awkward high school was? Maybe you’re even still in high school. Ok then, how awkward was asking or being asked to the dance? What about when you were turned down? Rejection can [...]

SXSW 2010 Review: Micmacs a tire-larigot

I’ll admit from the start that for whatever reason, even though I thoroughly enjoyed this film, festival fatigue hit me like a ton of bricks while watching Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs. Maybe it was having to read subtitles or maybe I’m just getting old. Regardless, I’m having a very difficult time recalling a lot of [...]

SXSW 2010 Review: Greenlit

So this one just seemed interesting from the trailer I posted a couple weeks back. Basically, an independent film is going to be produced through a “green process.” What this means is that the production will actively use recycled goods, recycle the goods that they procure, and do everything they can not to harm the environment in any way. In the film, we’re given two examples where Hollywood has altered the environment- 2000′s The Beach where an entire beach was altered by tearing down vegetation and sand dunes, and 1997′s Titanic, where Fox decided to dump the ginormous chlorine water tank used for filming back into the ocean, devastating 1000s of aquatic life. These examples help to quickly explain why the decision to make a “green film” is important. I know most of the audience, myself included, were probably convinced of this before stepping in. But this argument likely goes a long way to interest those on the fence.
