Retro Review: The Night of the Living Dead (1968)

This was the first time I had ever seen this movie.  I know, what kind of an asshole loves zombies but doesn’t see the one film that paved the way for the modern zombie apocalypse?  This one, that’s who.  So I sat down to watch this flick the other day.  For those even less cool [...]

Retro Review: The Crazies (1973)

I figured I would review this one since the remake is coming out tomorrow.  I’ll be honest, I hadn’t even heard of this film before I saw the trailer for the new one.  I haven’t seen the new one yet but I can already tell they’ve made a film that’s quite a departure from this [...]

Retro Review: Zombi 2 aka Zombie (1979)

If you’ve been reading our site at any length, you’ve probably noticed that I’m a rather huge fan of the zombie sub-genre.  I had heard of Lucio Fulci’s Zombi 2, or Zombie as it was released here in the states, and had even seen several clips as they played before movies at the Alamo Drafthouse. [...]

Retro Review: The Night of the Comet (1984)

Never heard of this one? Neither had I but the wife insisted it was cool so into the Netflix Queue it went. We watched it the other night and I was actually pretty impressed. You take your immediately post-apocalytpic setting, insert your strong female lead complete with uzi, and then add a [...]

Retro Review: Rad

From the opening stunt montage, Rad lives up to its name. This is one of those movies that I’ve actually had a couple of requests to review from our readers. When I posted on Facebook about acquiring the film through a stealthy manner, I was accosted with more comments than usual, mostly from people that I haven’t spoken to since high school. There is quite an impressive fervor for a film that has never been released on DVD and really hasn’t been relevant in 24 years. But more on that after the jump.

Retro Review: H.O.T.S

The first thing I need to do with this review is thank reader and frequent commenter Cminor for suggesting it. The second thing I’ll have to do is go ahead and apologize because some readers, especially females, may find some of the things I’m about to write offensive.  Things like boobies, bujungas, cheechees, and fun [...]

Retro Review: Meatballs

So this is one of the few Retro Reviews I’ll write where I’ve seen the movie before but have mostly forgotten it.  Strangely, I saw it less than a year ago but for whatever reason, it just didn’t stick with me.  Meatballs has its moments but for the most part, it’s too locked in on [...]

Retro Review: National Lampoon's Animal House

This review starts a month long series for the Retro Review where we’ll be looking at some comedies of the 70s and 80s. These films will range from rather obscure, like H.O.T.S., to iconic, such as the film discussed in this review.
I know what you’re thinking-  ”He’s reviewing fucking Animal House?   Everyone’s [...]

Retro Review: 48 Hours

You’ve heard it said before but it was a phrase that I heard constantly in my head while watching 48 Hours- you just can’t get away with this type of film anymore. We seem to sweep race under the rug a lot these days. A great example is the film Friday Night Lights. [...]

Retro Review: Ernest Saves Christmas

Ernest Goes to Camp was the second film I ever saw in the theater. I remember the part where he gets caught in a rotisserie scared the shit out of me. But at the same time, I just ate it up. There’s something about lovable goofball Ernest P. Worrell that just struck [...]

Retro Review: Christmas Evil

Sometimes I search Netflix for the term “Christmas” so I can find some movies that fit my Retro Review rules and this month’s theme.  Every once in a while, the description of one of these search results excites me.  But more often than not, this process fails me.  This review will certainly embody the latest [...]

Retro Review: Die Hard

I feel silly writing this review since I’ve probably seen this movie a dozen or more times.  But for the last few years, it’s been my favorite Christmas movie and has become a holiday staple in our house every year.  I mean seriously, can you name another Christmas movie that’s better?  Didn’t think so.  Now [...]

Retro Review: Black Christmas (1974)

This week begins a month long tradition for the Retro Review of reviewing Christmas films. We’ll resume the normal slate of retro flicks in January.
Did you know that before he brought us the perennial Christmas classic A Christmas Story that director Bob Clark directed cult-slasher flick Black Christmas? For that matter, do you [...]

Retro Review: Planes, Trains & Automobiles

What better Turkey day film is there than Planes, Trains & Automobiles? I’m sure that one day we’ll finally get the full fledged version of Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving, but in the meantime, this 1987 epic stands tall amongst Thanksgiving Day themed films. Although I had seen bits and pieces of this John Hughes [...]

Retro Review: Tootsie

For my generation, it was Mrs. Doubtfire.  For the following generation, it was Big Momma’s House.  So as you can imagine, I approached my first viewing of Tootsie with caution regardless of all the praise it had garnered back in 1982.  Beyond all that however, I can easily say that the film was very enjoyable [...]
