moonImagine if your job was to man a space station on the Moon for 3 years, sending rock deposits back to Earth for being repurposed into energy.  Your only companion is a talking computer whose tranquilizing monotone makes for less than engaging conversations.  And then you start having hallucinations.

Moon brings this premise to life and pits Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) against himself as he learns that his eventual replacement may not be who his employer said it would.  The setting evokes 2001 and Alien with long white corridors and whisper quiet atmosphere with only the “beeps” and “tones” of the space station echoing off the walls.  The effects are great and the music sets the tone very well.  All of these elements go to great lengths to fortify the feeling of solitude we share with Sam.  Rockwell is virtually the only actor in the film and his dynamic performance, going from “high five” mode to complete mental breakdown, gives us a very realistic portrayal of someone in this type of setting.

Rereading that last paragraph, it’s apparent that I liked the film way more than I thought I did.  Maybe it ran a little long but there’s a lot of things to dissect here and I won’t go into detail because the experience of seeing the film without all the surprises ruined is definitely worth the ride.  Perhaps when the film is eventually released, we can discuss it further but for now I can only offer my recommendation.
