RomanOk so, yes, I like fucking romantic comedies.  Blow me.

The wife and I went and watched Roman Holiday today.  The film resolves around Princess Ann, played by Audrey Hepburn, who grows tired with her prestige lifestyle of routine press interviews and meet and greets with every foreign leader in the world.  One evening after getting a little irrational about the next day’s schedule, she sneaks out to get a taste of the city life.  Along the way, she meets up with the dashing Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck) who is a reporter scheduled to interview the princess the next morning.  Once he realizes who she is, he takes advantage of the one-on-one time to secretly snap photos of her highness so that he can earn some much needed cash.

I know, I know.  That’s really fucking convoluted. And you probably think you know how it all ends because I know about 45 minutes in I certainly thought I did, too.  But when the Paramount logo faded in at the end, I was pleasantly surprised with how everything turned out.  And although some of the gags were a bit dated as you might expect from a 56 year old movie, I was also not expecting to find as much of the humor as funny as I did.  Yeah, I’m gay like that.

I think the viewing experience I had was pretty much perfect for a film from the Classical Hollywood Era- we went to the Downtown Alamo Drafthouse and they were actually showing a gorgeous print as opposed to just putting on the DVD.  Better yet, they didn’t have the film spliced together on a platter so they would alternate each reel ontwo projectors, thus recreating the presentation original audiences experienced back in 1953.  I was nerding out on the whole thing.

So, if you’re into romantic comedies, this is worth it as it’s easiest one of the best I’ve seen.  It was an interesting experience for me as well because I really didn’t know anything about the film.  I also didn’t know that it was Audrey Hepburn’s first film.  She won an Oscar for her performance.  Won.  She didn’t just get the horseshit nomination that most first-time actors or actresses received when they do a great job.  She put forth a mighty dosage of pwn-tang and rode it all the way to the Academy Awards.

Loved the original The Truth About Charlie, with Hepburn and Carey Grant; great detective/romantic-comedy film!

This is really great movie and you shouldn’t expect anyone to blow you for liking this movie because you don’t want a bj from somebody with bad taste. Gregory Peck’s the man in everything he did plus it’s got the dude from Green Acres in it.

Literally one of the first reviews I ever wrote. I was still concerned with the reaction I might get for admitting I like girly movies. This plug-in that tweets old reviews completely rules.

I think guys with wives get an instant pass on the liking of girly movies. But that this is much better than any modern girly movie certainly doesn’t hurt.
